This project addresses offshore wind characterization and forecasting challenges with an integrated observational-modeling-applications research initiative focused on the Southern New England offshore wind development area. The observational data collected will yield improved understanding of key wind-wave-ocean interaction processes within the marine atmospheric boundary. These new insights will be used to build new parameterizations for the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) that are appropriate for forecasting winds at the hub and rotor plane in the offshore environment. Working with industry and other stakeholders, the team will evaluate the impact these improvements have on practical industry uses. The project will disseminate results to stakeholders and the wider wind energy/meteorology community through workshops and research dissemination forums.
